SHORINKAN DOJOS
Shōrin-ryū (少林流) received it name from Sensei Choshin Chibana in 1933 however, the system is much older. In Okinawa Shorin-ryu is one of the major styles taught and has a world wide following. The name Shorin-ryu pays respect to the Chinese arts that have enfluenced the system. Shorin (少林) means "small & Forest", in Japanese& Chinese are used for Shaolin Kung Fu & Ryu simply means "school"
The Okinawans mixed the martial arts of Shaolin Kung Fu with the existing Okinawan fighting systems that existed at the time.
In 1970's Sensei Shugoro Nakazato created the Shorin-ryu Shorinkan Association, and since its creation the organization can be found in every country.
In 2016 Sensei Nakazato passed, and his son Minuro Nakazato is now the head of the Shorinkan association, and the Shorinkan Dojos which are affiliated.
In the United States there are many very good Okinawan Shorin-ryu Shorinkan karate schools ( Martial art schools ) that can teach the art of Shorin-ryu (Kobayashite) in the maner it was intended. These schools belong to the Shorin-ryu Shorinkan Karate assocation and this page lists each State with a corresponding link to help you find a school near you.
